FISHING INDUSTRY AT BLUFF
CATCH NOW BIGGEST IN N.Z. (New Zealana Press Association) INVERCARGILL December 20. With more than 55 per cent, of the crayfish c ught in New Zealand now being landed at Bluff this port handles more fish and shellfish than any other port in the Dominion. The fishing industry at Bluff has assumed important proportions and about one third of the population is engaged in the industry. The crayfish catch last year was valued at £433,339. more than three times the value of the oyster catch of £129,697 The value of the crayfish industry for the whole of New Zealand has shown a substantial rise in the last seven years, rising from £100.254 in 1949, to £782,269 last year. Auckland has 159 vessels engaged in the fishing industry. Bluff and Stewart Island had 122 vessels fishing in southern waters last year. Other fishing vessels also registered at the port brought the total almost to 160. The total quantity of fish and shellfish landed at Bluff last year was more than twice that of Auckland. The total quantity of crayfiah, including cray tails, exported from New Zealand in 1955 was 31,079 cwt with a value of £953,631 or 1,400,000 dollars.
