TUNNEL ROAD
Sir. —The Prime Minister was badly advised when, at the function winding up the Tunnel Road Promotion Committee, he urged the completion of the tunnel road in the next four years. Only the new harbour will be suitable for road transport, and we have been told that it will not be finished for at least eight years. A booklet issued by lhe now defunct committee gives the annual cost of the road when completed as about £250.000, to be collected from tolls, mostly on goods. Completion four years before the harbour can only mean a loss of up to £1.000.000? What could we do with this sum elsewhere? Irrigate the plains, for instance! Perhaps we should look for a cheaper means of improving access to Lyttelton in the meantime.— Yours, etc., EARTHY. November 18, 1956.
