INTRUDER ELUDES POLICE

SPECTACULAR ESCAPE IN BATHING SHORTS (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, November 19. A man who broke into the Olympic Pool at Newmarket for a swim, and then tried to break open the safe, made a spectacular escape from policemen about 3.30 a.m. on Sunday. He sprinted to die highest terrace above the pool, climbed on to a flat roof, jumped 20ft to a lean-to, dropped from there to the ground and then jumped another 15ft down the railway embankment and escaped into the Newmarket railway yards. He held his clothing in a bundle throughout the escape. The police said he showed a complete disregard of possible serious injury. The safe, which he damaged severely, but could not open, contained only a few pounds.
