RUSH FOR PETROL IN WELLINGTON
MINISTER DEPLORES RUMOURS (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. November 19. Rumours of imminent rationing caused heavy buying of petrol in Wellington during the week-end. Service stations record unprecedented sales, in tins, jars and drums, on both days. Up to a late hour last night there were at least 12 cars queued in front of each of the main all-night stations. The Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr E. H. Halstead) last night reiterated his statements earlier in the week that there are no plans to ration petrol, and normal supplies are coming forward. Mr Halstead said he did not know where the rumours started, but he would like to get hold of the person responsible. “If people keep this sort of thing up, though, normal supplies are likely to get a bit difficult.” he said. “It is really most disturbing—l have had rings about it all day. “It is all so silly, when you remember that the Abadan crisis was much worse, and there was no panic then.”
