SHIP FREIGHTS INCREASED

Coastal And Tasman Services

STEAMER-EXPRESS FARES RISE

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, November 16.

The New Zealand Shipowners’ Federation announces increases in coastal freights from November 23. The main increase is 5s a ton, but increases on bulk cargoes will range from Is to 2s 6d a ton. In the Wellington-Lyttelton service, passenger fares will be increased by ss. Passage bookings already made and confirmed will be honoured at the old rates. In the Wellington-Picton service, there will be no alteration in the charges for passenger cars or in fares. Simultaneously, the Trans-Tasman Freight Conference announces an increase in freights of 5s a ton for general cargo. Charges for bulk cargoes will be increased by 2s 6d a ton. Passage fares are not affected. The reasons given are the effect of the Arbitration Court’s general wage order, applicable from November 19, on the shipping industry, which employs New Zealand labour extensively, and a continuing increase in the cost of replacing vessels, “towards which the tax-free depreciation allowance is inadequate.”
