N.Z. ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION
Four Ships To Be Used
AMERICAN AID WITH TRANSPORT
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, November 16. Four ships will take the New Zealand Antarctic expedition south. In addition to the expedition’s own ship, H.M.N.Z.S. Endeavour, which will take half the expedition’s members and priority cargo and equipment, three United States ships, the icebreaker Glacier, the cargo carrier John S. Towle, and the Curtiss, which is taking United States scientists, will cooperate.
The first ship to sail will be the John S. Towle from Wellington about November 29. She will take a large amount of the New Zealand expedition’s cargo and three of the party. The Glacier will sail from Lyttelton about December 5. taking 17 members of the expedition apd 100 tons of fuel for it.
The Endeavour will leave Wellington on December 15 for Bluff, her port of departure, by way of Lyttelton and Dunedin. She will take all except three of the main wintering party, also three of the summer support party, two international geophysical year party members, and the foreman of the construction group—a total of 20 expedition members.
The Curtiss, which is expected to arrive in New Zealand about midJanuary, will not carry any New Zealand expedition members to the Antarctic. but will take meat for the expedition. A fourth United States ship, the Arneb. will take New Zealand members of the joint United States and New Zealand International geophysical year team to Cape Adare. Those going in United States ships will rejoin the New Zealand expedition in the Antarctic as opportunity permits.
