Clerical Collar Cashed A Church of England clergyman, who went to a Surrey charity function without money or his cheque book, took off his clerical collar, stuck two penny stamps on it and wrote a cheque on it for one guinea. The Rev. J. Huggins heard today that the bank had honoured it.—London, November 16. Early Fruit The first strawberries and cherries are appearing in the shops, but are still expensive. Strawberries sell at 4s 6d to 7s 6d a punnet for the best. Mushrooms retail at 3s 6d to 4s 6d a pound. The best strawberries, grown under glass in the Mount Pleasant area, were selling as high as 4s 6d a punnet in the markets yesterday, but prices are expected to fall when those from Cheviot and Waimate come in next week. Little interest was shown in the Horotane cherries marketing at 7s 7d a pound. Retailers thought it better to wait until next week, when serious picking will begin and prices should stabilise at a lower rate. Icebreaker Open to Public The U.S.S. Glacier, one of the icebreakers of the United States Antarctic expedition which was in Lyttelton last year and returned yesterday, will be open for public inspection on Saturday, Sunday, and Wednesday. between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. Special arrangements will be made for parties on other days. Those sponsoring party tours should ask for Lieu-tenant-Commander J. T. Schermerhorn or Lieutenant Joseph Morgan, between 8 a.m. on noon, Monday to Friday. Novel Address

A letter posted in Christchurch at noon on Monday was addressed in an unusual manner. On the envelooe were sketched a house, several uprooted trees, and a man pushing a pram. Sitting up in the pram was a baby pointing to the man’s big toe. and crying, “Papa.” Outside the house was a sign reading “H. Libeau. 81.” On Tuesday evening, the Papatoetoe Post Office telephoned Mr H. Libeau. of 81 Flatbush road. Papatoetoe. and asked him to collect his mail. Mr E. H. Lusby, the head postman at Papatoetoe picked the street right away, after asking, “Do those trees lying down mean anything?” The letter had been posted by Mr Libeau’s son-in-law, of New Brighton. The Papatoetoe Post Office gives full marks to the mail sorter in the Christchurch office who sent the letter on its way. It is hoped to have a photograph of the envelope reproduced in “Katipo.” the official journal of the Post and Telegraph Association. — (P.A.) Helicopters at Wigram

The U.S.S. Glacier’s three helicopters were flown off as she approached the Lyttelton heads yesterday morning. They landed at the R.N.Z.A.F. station, Wigram. Two will stay there, and the third will fly to Wellington soon to join the U.S.S. Northwind, an icebreaker which will be leading the Knox Coast group. It was thought better to bring the third aircraft out on the Glacier than fly it right across the United States to join the Northwind on her departure from Seattle. Markets’ Opening Hours

Fruit and produce markets in Christchurch are now opening for an hour and a half—from 7 p.m. to 8.30 p.m.— on Sundays. In addition, the markets will open from 5 a.m. on week-days, and from 7 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. Monday to Thursday, from December 17. The extended hours are to enable growers to make deliveries clear of the daily morning auctions, and will continue throughout the Central Otago stone fruit season. Arrangements have been made with the Railways Department to have Central Otago fruit delivered at 5 a.m. At present, the markets open at 6 a.m. Adam and Eve in a Car The Garden of Eden story has been given an up-to-the-minute literal slant in child art, according to Mr L. B. Lewis, senior inspector of Hawke’s Bay, who opened a primary schools art display in Gisborne. He said he had examined childrens illustrations based on the Garden of Eden story related by the teacher. One .child had drawn a picture of three people in a motor-car on a road leading out of a forest of flowers. Asked what it represented the child replied: “That’s God driving Adam and Eve out of the Garden of Eden.” Weather Observer on Leave Strangely out of place among the neat Navy blue uniforms and gold trimmings of the officers in the wardroom of the U.S.S. Glacier when she berthed in Lyttelton yesterday were the dark green tartan shirt and khaki drill trousers of Mr George Poppleton. Lean and bearded Mr Poppleton is the former officer in charge of New Zealand’s Campbell Island weather station, who was picked up during a twohour stop on Wednesday. Mr Poppleton said yesterday that he was coming back on leave. He will go first to Wellington, his home, town, and then to Rotorua. Fishing Rivers According to advice received from the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society, the condition of the fishing rivers at noon yesterday was: Halswell, clear and fishable; Ashley, Hurunui, Waimakariri, and Lower Rakaia, dirty and unfishable; Selwyn and Wai° i, discoloured but clearing; Upper Rakaia, above normal and discoloured. The weather at Lake Coleridge and Highbank was light north-west and cloudy.
