CERTIFIED SEED APPLICATIONS
INCREASE EXPECTED THIS YEAR
The last of many applications for Government certified seed in Canterbury was taken by the Department of Agriculture, yesterday. Few late entries are expected. Last year 132,000 acres came under the control of the field superintendent, Christchurch, and this year’s tally is expected to exceed that as farmers will close more paddocks for seed purposes than before. Under the department’s seed certification scheme nucleous seed produced by the crop research division is sown under contract to the Government in selected areas which produce Govern--ment stock seed. This is allocated, through merchants, to the farmers. Government stock seed, which the farmers grow, produces the nedigree seed, then “mother 7 seed which finally produces standard, or pasture seed. Although it may be economical to resow the same stock from three to 10 years, it must be certified each year in order to keep the standard high. With the records kept by the department the pedigree of the seed is most accurate.
