NEW BRIDGE AT ARTHUR’S PASS
Attempt To Expedite
Construction ADVICE FROM MINISTRY OF WORKS A new bridge may be built over Avalanche creek at Arthur’s Pass during the current financial year. In a letter to the Commissioner of-Works <Mr A. E. Clark), the Arthur’s Pass National Park Board has stated that nothing can be done to carry out proposals for the further development of park lands near the present park headquarters until the deviation of the main highway and the bridge at Avalanche creek is under way. The board’s proposals include the restoration and enlargement of the rock garden containing specimens of plants found in the park; improved public facilities and beautification oi the open space immediately south oi the ranger’s cottage; and an alpine museum.
Because funds were not available to build the bridge during the current year, and it was necessary to reduce the estimates for highways construction. the item for the cost of the Avalanche creek bridge had been deleted, said Mr Clark, in reply to the board. Because of the board’s request, he had submitted an application to the National Roads Board for reinstatement of the item so that the bridge could be completed in the current financial year. If the request was not successful, the item would be included in next year’s estimates.
