MATERNITY HOSPITALS
Sir.—’This afternoon I visited a large Christchurch maternity hospital and was appalled by the number of infants crying wretchedly in the nursery; the next feeding time was two hours away. This misery seems completely unnecessary. It has been proved by reputable scientists to be harmful to emotional growth, and it deprives the mother of her natural right to learn to care for her child from the beginning. Rooming-in is accepted practice in many English and American hospitals. When are our New Zealand hospitals going to catch up with progressive methods?—Yours, etc.,
MARY WOODWARD. August 17, 1956.
