CHINA TODAY
Sir.—Religious missionaries in China should have realised that interference in a social and industrial revolution is stupid and dangerous, and they should have got out of the way. Recently, a news item stated that two groups most completely out of touch with the Church were industrial classes and intellectuals. This is largely due to the clear perception of the most intelligent of the working class that the ecclesiastical forces have always been mustered against them. Then there is a marked disposition on the part of increasing numbers of intellectuals to revolt against all oppressors, be they royal, priestly, or economic. It is time the world forgot its prejudices against Communist China, recognised her right to govern herself, and opened trading relations with her. In the case of Japan, it would mean an increase of 25 per cent, in her foreign trade, and the Japanese unemployed would eat more. —Yours, etc.,
RALPH S. WHEELER. Timaru, August 16, 1956. [This correspondence is now closed.— Ed., “The Press.”]
