PENSIONERS LIVING IN ROOMS

R.S.A. SEEKS EVIDENCE OF HARDSHIP The difficulties of single former servicemen on a pension of £3 10s a week, and living in rooms in Christchurch were mentioned by Mr D. Barrett, the welfare officer, at a meeting of the executive of the Christchurch Returned Services’ Association last evening. The association was endeavouring to get a list of cases so that representations could be made to the Prime Minister (Mr Holland) and the Minister in charge of War Pensions (Mr T. L. Macdonald), he said. There had been 11 cases reported to the office so far, and some of them were “scaring.” One man paid £1 2s a week room rent, and x if he had to buy two meals a day he was faced with an outlay of £2 16s a week.

Another man, aged 78. had had no food over the week-end because he was without money until pension day. Mr Barrett said that generally the New Zealand war pensions system was as good as anything he had read about in the British Commonwealth. There were a few anomalies but the R.S.A. hoped they could be rectified.
