INSEMINATION OF MERINOS
Last year controlled artificial insemination in a normal breeding season was carried out at Messrs McDonald Bros.’ Old Cobram Merino stud. Earham. New South Wales, by Dr. T. J Robinson when he was at the Melbourne University. Three hundred ewes were selected and divided into three groups. The first group was inseminated during normal oestrus; the second was given progesterone for 16 days, normal ovulation accompanied by oestrus followed, and at that stage the group was inseminated; and the third group received the same treatment as the second group, but to increase the precision of synchronisation of oestrus pregnant mare serum, gonadotrophin, was given the day after progesterone withdrawal. Conception rates were satisfactory throughout, while synchronisation was reasonably successful in group two and extremely precise in group three.
