HOTEL LICENSEES WARNED

SELWYN COMMITTEE SITTING

“TOO MANY BREACHES OF ACT ”

“The committee is not at all happy With the conduct of the hotels in this particular area over the last 12 months,” said the chairman of the Selwyn Licensing Committee (Mr L. N. Ritchie. S.M.), at Leeston yesterday. “It appears that approximately onethird of the licensees have been convicted for breaches of the Licensing Act, and this is an increase oyer the previous year, and the committee is disturbed that this is the position. “It feels that it is only fair and right to warn licensees. All the Magistrates in the Christchurch area will be strict in connexion with the granting of certificates of fitness to hold licences. “If a licensee has a conviction this is reported by the police when an application for a certificate of fitness is made. If a certificate of fitness is refused in this area, it is quite apparent that it will be refused in other areas,” he continued. “It is necessary to bear these facts in mind when we want licensees whose conduct merits approbation and not censure,” said the chairman.
