Battleship In Collision
(Rec. 10 p.m.) NORFOLK (Virginia), May 6. The United States battleship Wisconsin collided with the escort destroyer Eaton today in foggy weather about 50 miles off the Virginia Capes, but no casualties were reported. The Navy said the collision occurred as the Eaton was making a turn in an effort to recover a member of the crew who had been reported to have fallen overboard.
A Navy spokesman said the Eaton was in no immediate danger of sinking. The Wisconsin hit the destroyer about 100 feet aft of her bow, slicing a deck-to-waterline gash 30 feet deep. One compartment was reported to be completely flooded and three others partly flooded. The Wisconsin’s bow also was damaged. Atlantic Fleet headquarters said, but the extent of the damage was not known. It was not believed to be serious.
