SOVIET ANSWER TO NATO
“Division Of Work” In Warsaw Pact
(Rec. 8 p.m.) BERLIN, May 6. The Soviet-bloc States, all linked in the Warsaw Pact, to which eight nations belong, has launched a coordinated system of “division of work” for basic industries, the chief East German Communist Party newspaper, “Neues Deutschland.” said yesterday. The newspaper said that the member States of the pact, which is the Eastern counterpart to NATO, have begun to restrict economic development in each country to the most suitable industries, and to rely on imports from partner nations for other items. East Germany, for instance, would concentrate on the development of her brown coal industries and her special high quality steel products. Poland and Czechoslovakia would exnand their hard coal output. Hungary would concentrate on her aluminium industry, Rumania on oil and natural gas, Bulgaria on chemicals and non-ferrous metals, and Albania on chromium and non-ferrous metal ores.
British Fair Salesmen. — Some salesmen at the British Industries Fair just sat around, doing cross-word puzzles, the president of the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce (Mr E. M. Clayson) said yesterday “Some just don’t take the slightest notice of whoever may be going to the stand.” he said.—Birmingham, May 5.
