116 Students In Court After Riot

PHILADELPHIA, May 4. Rowdyism landed 116 University of Pennsylvania students in Court today after they had spent the night in gaol. All were charged with a breach of the peace, inciting to riot and disorderly conduct. The Magistrate (Mr John Coyle) held 28 in 500 dollars bail each for a further hearing and discharged the remaining 88. The students started out last night by throwing a barricade of ash cans and wood across a busy street near the university. Traffic was snarled and vehicles were lined up for blocks before police were able to clear the way.

The students launched a barrage of eggs and other missiles Ifrom windows. Police went into the houses after the students, pulling them out by the dozens, despite indignant protests. Two policemen finished up with minor injuries. One student with crutches drew the cheers of his colleagues. He was being escorted to a police van when he suddenly threw away the crutches and bolted down the street.
