A-Bomb Tested In Pacific

NEW YORK, May 5. The United States yesterday exploded the first of about 10 nuclear weapons in its new series of tests at the mid-Pacific proving grounds The weapon was described as a “junior size”- atom bomb. The yellowish fireball from the explosion spread out for about a mile. Reporters aboard the observer ship. Mount McKinley, about 15 miles from Runit, Island, where the bomb was exploded, saw the familiar mushroom cloud reach an altitude of about 30.000 ft in little more than a minute.

The explosion, which officials rated in the “small” category of equal to about 1000 tons of T.N.T.. reached the Mount McKinley more than a minute after the device was detonated.
