OLYMPIC APPEAL FUND

CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION GIVES £5O The Canterbury Rowing Association decided last evening to support the Olympic appeal fund, and approved a contribution of £5O. “Canterbury is the leading sporting province and most clubs are willing to assist the fund, but they wish to see that any money they contribute is used for nominees of their own sport,” said Mr B. R. Walker. “The British Empire and Olympic Games Association wishes to get beyond this. Their aim is to see that the best candidates go irrespective of which sport nominees come from.” Rowing had always been well represented at the Empire Games, and he felt that the association should make an effort to assist the 1956 Olympic Games fund, Mr Walker said. “We have to forget parochialism. Even if the whole team comes from Auckland, we must consider it as a New Zealand team.” said Mr Walker. The president (Mr W. G. Richards) said he did not know where the money was coming from, but no doubt the association would get it. Various methods of raising the association’s contribution - ere then discussed. Several of those present then made donations of £l. Messrs E. Lindstrom. S. Cox, W. H. Candy, and R. Stiles were appointed the association’s representatives to a meeting with the Drainage Board to discuss weed growth in the /.von. Maiden class boats Lad been stipulated for the Kaiapoi regatta, said Mr Lindstrom, who considered this unwise at this stage of the season, particularly in Olympic selection year. It would be better if senior crews, particularly fours, could use best and best boats The programme had been approved by the association, but this point had slipped through without being noticed, said Mr Richards. Clubs had not been notified of the position on tne programmes supplied to them. All that could be done now was to ask Kaiapoi if it was prepared to change this condition, said Mr Richards.
