ROWING
COMPOSITE CREW DISPUTE CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION HAS NO COMMENT The Canterbury Rowing Association decided last evening to take no action on a letter which was printed in “The Press” last Saturday over the pseudonym “Thole Pin.” A composite crew, chosen to represent the province last rowing season, had hau to disband because some members of the crew had refused to row with the crew as selected, said the correspondent. He asked whether these men would be considered for New Zealand selection. “The letter shows that there is still bad feeling over this matter. We have to decide whether to answer it. and whether we should make a statement to clear the air.” said the president (Mr W. G. Richards). The letter had been referred to him, said Mr Richards. He had decided to make no comment till the association had considered the matter. Mr M. Hullett then moved that no action be taken. Seconding the motion, Mr S. Cox saia the association should not consider anonymous correspondence. The correspondent could have ascertained the full facts by a direct approach to the association. “I favour the motion, but would it not be better, perhaps, if we did explain parts of it?” asked Mr E. Lindstrom. “We took no disciplinary action because the delegates to this association voted against it,” said Mr Richards. The position was not likely to recur, as the NeuZealand selectors had stated that otherwise suitable candidates for national crews could be left out if they considered that the rowers had unsuitable temperaments. The motion was passed unanimously.
