THE BANDS

Sir, —At Lancaster Park on Saturday the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr R. M*. Macfarlane, M.P.) stated that bands are always willing to assist civic authorities by adding colour and interest to parades and other local gatherings when they are called upon. He rightly remarked that innumerable sacrifices are often associated with their public appearances. Irrespective of their musical instruments, the City Council should fully appreciate their self-denial and grant them reasonable monetary support for maintenance, a gesture which would have the unanimous approval of the community ,as direct and indirect ratepayers.—Yours, etc., HUMBLE HARRY. March 4, 1956.
