LEADERSHIP IN FRANCE
PARIS, January 26. Mr Jacques Duclos, the French Communist leader, told the President. Mr Rene Coty, yesterday that the Communists favoured a Socialist Prime Minister to succeed Mr Edgar Faure, who resigned on Tuesday. Mr Duclos was the first Parliamentary party chief consulted by Mr Coty on the formation of the new Government, made necessary by the dissolution of the old National Assembly and the election of a new Chamber. The Communists, the single party with the greatest number of seats in the new Assembly, are pressing for a “Popular Front” Government of Communists, Socialists and Radicals.
