Wage Increases In Britain
(Rec. 10 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 26. Wages in Britain rose by 7 per cent, last year and just kept ahead of the rising cost of living, the Ministry of Labour Gazette said today. The gazette estimated that nearly 12.000 000 workers received wage increases amounting at the year’s end to about £5.000,000 a week. It also announced that nearly 3,800,000 working days were lost by industrial disputes—about 1.300,000 more than in 1954. The largest number of stoppages of work arising from industrial disputes occurred in the coal mines, and accounted for about a third of the total loss of working days.
