MISS COX WINS AGAIN
LAWN TENN/S
WELLINGTON TITLE (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, January 23. Miss S. Cox, aged 19, won her fourth major lawn tennis title in as many weeks when she beat Miss B. Nelson, 10-8, 6-1, in the final of the women’s singles in the Wellington championships, which ended at Central Park today. After overcoming a set point in the first set, Miss Cox settled down. Her volleying was deadly. The runner-up in the national men’s singles championship, R. S. McKenzie, beat P. G Nicholls in four sets in the men’s final. Play was good in patches, with McKenzie’s superior stroking and match temperament deciding the issue. Finals resulted:— Men’s Singles.—R. S. McKenzie beat P. G. Nicholls, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Men’s Doubles.—R. McKenzie and P. Nicholls beat M. L. Dunn and P. Taylor, 6-2. 4-6, 6-2, 6-1. Women’s Singles.—Miss S. Cox beat Miss B. Nelson, 10-8, 6-1. Women’s Doubles.—Misses R. Bulleid and H. Dykes beat Misses S. Cox and B. Nelson, 7-5, 7-5. Mixed Doubes.—P. Nicholls and Miss S. Cox beat L. O’Neill and Miss E. Meyer, 6-2, 6-2.
