EXPRESS HANDICAP TO SURE MAGGIE

(From Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH, January 5. Sure Maggie gained an overdue win wheh she led from end to end in the Express Handicap which was run tn driving rain at the Greymouth Trotting Club’s meeting today. She finished full of running in the straight, and had almost four lengths to spare at the post over Dan’s Choice, which finished on solidly. Lance wood, from the back mark of 60 yards, did well to finish third, ahead of Crookstown. with the disappointing Kauranui and Wakeful at the head of the others. Decisive Win by Care The Summer Handicap, the other race for trotters, was won decisively by Care, which fought off a strong challenge by Te Waihopi over the last furlong. Care is a good type of trotter and more will be heard of him in the next few months. Te Waihopi had every chance, but could not match the winner’s pace over the last furlong. Wakeful, which broke several times, finished very fast for third, shading Lancewood by half a head. There was a gap to Loyal Chance. Annie Laurie, which was checked several times, and Elate at the head of the pthers. Good Effort by Elsinore Elsinore went to the front with one mile and a quarter to run. and she ran out the two miles too solidly for her rivals in the Brunner Handicap. She won with something in hand by two lengths from Punakai, which created a good impression. Lord Mackworth was three lengths away third, clear of Gothic. Spring Chat, and Golden Leader, with the remainder down the track. Beau Cobra Graduates Beau Cobra, which won on the course in Cctober, only to be relegated to second on the grounds of interference, graduated from maiden company in the Members’ Handicap. He was first out, but with five and a half furlongs to run was steadied behind Globetrotter. These two were clear racing to the straight, where Beau Cobra • had been pulled out to challenge. He came on to win easily by five lengths from Globetrotter, with two and a half lengths to Stylish Linda, which finished on to cut Half Back out of third place. Golden Leader and Red McGregor were next, well clear of the others. Improvers’ Handicap Clue and Parable won their respective divisions of the Improvers’ Handicap. Clue was never very far away in the first division, and he moved up to join Gold Bransen in the lead with two furlongs to run. They were followed into the straight by Suzendy. Battle Fling, and Gold Moana. Clue was soon clear and came on to win well by half a length from Nighl Owl. which finished very fast from the middle of the field. Gold Bransen tired in the run home and was two lengths back third, ahead of Gold Moana, which tangled for a major portion of the race. Suzendy and Palmarie headed the others. Clue is a four-year-old gelding by Intruder from Imperial Worthy, the dam also of Pointer and King's Order. He is owned and trained by A. Holmes, and should be hard to beat on the second day of the meeting. Parable trailed the pacemaker, Mendip Song, throughout the second division, and he was pulled out just after reaching the straight. He responded well and came on to beat Tassel 1 Trick, which made up ground, by half a neck. Mendip Song tired slightly over the last half furlong, but held on for third, a head from Tassell Trick, with half a length to Daisy Grattan. Gay Polka, Quo Vadis. and Jungle Song. ARMIDSON LEASED BY MR W. E. DESMOND AUSTRALIAN VISIT PLANNED Mr W. E. Desmond, of Christchurch, has leased the trotter Armidson from Mr A. O. Fleming, of Mabel Bush, n<bar Invercargill, and he is now being trained at Prebbleton by A. M.
