MISS CRAPP BEATS MISS ROE

SWIMMING

110 Yards Freestyle At Sydney (N.Z. Press Association —Copyriphtf SYDNEY. January 5. The New Zealander, Marion Roe, came second to the Empire Games champion, Lorraine Crapp, in the New South Wales 110 yards freestyle swimming championship at the North Sydney pool last night. Miss Roe and Miss Crapp swam together for the first 75 yards of the race, and it was only over the closing stages that Miss Crapp gained a lead. Mis’s Crapp recorded her slowest time for 12 months, 67sec, in winning. This was 2-ssec slower than the time she recorded in winning the title last year, and well outside her Australian record oi 65.5xec. Miss Crapp was slowly away and touched a fraction behind Miss Roe at the 55, yards mark. After the swim. Miss Crapp’s coach, Frank Guthrie, said a bad cold which had kept her out of the water for 12 days recently had held back her preparation. Miss Roe swam well, considering that she arrived in Australia only last Sunday. She said she was a “little disappointed” at her time of 67.8 sec. ”1 had hoped to get down to my best time of 67.25ec, but I suppose it’s a bit early in the season,” she added. Miss Roe's swim last night was her first in a 55 yards pool since the Empire Games in Vancouver in 1954.
