Clemency Has Narrow Win At Grey mouth

TROTTING

(From Our Own Reporter)

GREYMOUTH. January 4. Clemency, owned and trained at Timarti by W. J. Marshall, and driven by C. F. King, won her third successive race on the West Coast circuit when she held off Camber by a head in the President's Handicap, the main race and second leg of the double on the opening day of the Greymouth Trotting Club’s summer meeting at Victoria Park today. Clemency was never far away and she moved to the front just after straightening up. She responded well and lasted long enough to hold off the faster-finishing Camber. The others, headed by Nipalong and Royal Leaf, were not particularly impressive. The first leg of the double, the Victoria Park Handicap. was won convincingly by the Hari Hari-qwned and trained Brigadier Grattan, which has been off the winning list for more than two years. The Grattan Loyal gelding was the outsider of the field and returned a win dividend of £59 6s. He carried 6551 10s tickets in a pool of 22,840-1 on the double. He was capably driven by R. G. Morris, who until several months ago was as- ?£ clate 2 with J - D - Otten’s stables at West Melton. Brigadier Grattan gave his trainer and part-owner. A. J. Graham. a farmer, of Hari Hari, his first training success. The Brigadier Grattan—Clemency double returned £726 Is for £1 The Yaldhurst trainer. A. Holmes produced two members of his team. Clue and Care, to win well in their respective races. Both were driven by S. Melvin. Other smart efforts were returned by Elsinore and Parable.

The meeting was held in fine weather, but a shower before the first h a i# a ®“ ted track for the first nail of the programme. There was a fair attendance. Totalisator investments were £25,962 Ips, including £2835 10s on tne double, compared with £28.794 last year.

The programme dragged during the day, the last race being started about P-m- 35 minutes after the advertised starting time. Crown Jewel set a leisurely pace ,. for the first mile, and racing handVl, straight Cherry Queen was handiest to him. with Camber. Royal ru* „„ and Clemency prominent, thfi? 7 i vent t 0 the front with less hl a lur ?°JS to run, but he had to lata !X e .u rlght °. Ut to hold off a strong late challenge from Camber.

Camber lost ground at the start and was at the rear for most of the race. He did well to get within a head of the winner and will have prospects in the Greymouth Cup on Saturday. Nipalong was never far away in the running, and he finished boldly for third, a short length from Camber, with a similar distance to Royal Leaf, which received a perfect run. Next, beaten off. were Cherry Queen. Marionette, Crown Jewel and Johnny Gilbert in a bunch. Marionette. Johnny Gilbert and Radiant Diamond gave ground at the start.

At Long Odds Brigadier Grattan upset calculations with a very easy win in the Victoria Park Handicap. He made a good beginning from 24 yards and was soon handily placed behind the pacemakers, the favourite bracket of Spotlight and Anxiety. The last-named dropped out in the back straight, and racing to the home turn Brigadier Grattan raced past Spotlight, with Chief Lady handiest of the others.

Brigadier Grattan always had the opposition covered in the final stages of the race, and he won by four lengths from Chief Lady, which had every chance. Spotlight battled on in the straight for third, two lengths further back, with one length to Caprice, which was well back for most of the way. Carntyne, Reality and Charlotte Belt were next.

Reality did not look likely to win at any stage of the race and failed to show any dash over the last two furlongs.

Narrow Win For Spotlight Finishing fast on the outside, Spotlight got up in time to take a nose decision in the - Paparoa Handicap. Most persons on or near the line thought Carntyne had won by at least a neck, but the photo showed Spotlight to be the winner.

Patriotic made the pace for seven furlongs after which Anxiety took over. Anxiety was still in control from Chief Lady at the straight entrance, where Parable. Carntyne, and Spotlight were handy. Carntyne looked to have the race, won until Spotlight finished brilliantly to get up on the line. Two lengths -back Parable held on for third, a nose in front of Chief Lady, with a gap to Reality, Sound Barrier and Anxiety. Results:—
