NEW GOVERNMENT IN JAPAN

Hatoyama Promises Independence (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) TOKYO, November 22. Mr Ichiro Hatoyama, who was returned to power today at the head of Japan’s strongest post-war Government, pledged himself to make the nation independent, in the true sense of the word. The 72-year-old Mr Hatoyama had resigned to clear the way for a new Ministry, representing a Conservative Party formed by the merger last week of his own Democrats and the Liberals. For the first time in Japan’s history the country now has a twoparty Government. Mr Hatoyama said that the appearance of the two-party Government was indeed a happy development for the advancement of democracy and Parliamentary Government in Japan. He said that 10 years after the war “the time has now come, I believe, for Japan to reinstate herself as a truly independent nation.” The average age of the new Cabinet is 62. Mr Hatoyama and most of the other senior Ministers are over 70.
