PARLIAMENTARY SALARIES

Sir, —An extremely disquieting feature of the recent increase in Parliamentary salaries is that, the allowances are “tax free.” In a welfare State such a class privilege should not be tolerated for a moment because every citizen, rich and poor alike, must pay income and social security tax on every penny that is paid to them. Actually in accepting tax-free allowances, politicians are showing a very bad example which might encourage tax evasion.—Yours, etc.. NATIONALIST. August 29, 1955.
