EARLY LANCASTER PARK
Sir, —When glancing around the huge crowd at Lancaster Park on Saturday, I wondered if there was anyone present who saw football there earlier than I did. When I was seven (1883) my father took me with him every Saturday afternoon to watch football at the park. We had to walk from Colombo street south and it took 30 minutes to get there. The games were played from east to west in those days. No. 1 stand was the only one. Does anyone remember the fancy dress game that was held a few years later for charity? It was a very successful function and I have always had pleasant recollections of a Chinese mandarin who carried a very large Chinese umbrella. The ball, which was as big as a large beach ball, was thrown to him and he was soon brought down. It took several players to set him upright again, for he was a footballer on stilts, which made him eight feet high.—Yours, etc., G.D.F. August 28, 1955.
