RIOTS FEARED IN CYPRUS

New Precautions By Police (N.Z Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 10 p.m.) NICOSIA, Aug. 29. Police were on the alert throughout Cyprus today as the time drew close for talks to begin in London among Britain, Greece, and Turkey on the island colonv and on other east Mediterranean problems. Police stations in Cyprus have been equipped with steel helmets, riot gear, and coils of barbed wire for use in barricades in case of terrorist outbreaks. Left-wing leaders in Cyprus have described the London conference as “a trap to strangle Cypriot aspirations for self-determination.” Britain, Greece, Turkey will begin this secret round-table conference in London at 3 p.m. today. The British Government convened the talks after the recent outbreak of terrorism in Cyprus where a large section of the population of 500,000 wants Enosis (union with Greece). Greece is supporting the Enosis demand at the conference but Turkeys’ minimum demand at the conference is expected to be for the maintenance of the status quo on the island. Nearly 100.000 of Cyprus’s population are of Turkish origin.
