“How To Spot A Communist”

NEW YORK. The United States Defence Department has issued a six-page document called “How to Spot a Communist.” First, look out and listen for “A certain heaviness of style and a preference for long sentences”—you’re sure to be on the trail of a Communist. The Communist vocabulary—if you want it—includes such words as “Integrative thinking, vanguard, bourgeois nationalism, colonialism, materialist, dialectical, oppressive, progressive, exploitation, and syncretic faith.” If you are still not certain whether your man is a Communist, don’t give in. He will betray himself eventually by raising such issues as: McCarthyism, violations of civil rights, racial or religious discrimination, immigration laws, anti-subversive legislation, any legislation concerning labour unions, the military budget, and peace.”
