CHILLED BEEF EXPORTS

COMPARISON WITH LAMB PRICES
(New Zealand. Press Association) DUNEDIN, June 7. “There is no doubt at all that New Zealand has a great opportunity to build an export trade second to none with chilled beef, provided we breed and ship the required type and age.” Mr J. E. D. Roberts, South Otago member of the electoral committee of the New Zealand Meat Board, said today. New Zealand hindquarters of beef were at present selling at 2s 6d to 2s 8d per lb, compared with bestquality lamb at about 2s per lb, he said. “Today, New Zealand beef is selling at prices comparable with the best Argentine beef,” Mr Roberts said. “Wr in the South Island could and should contribute greatly to this trade. It seems that the Meat Board must, in the immediate future, see that facilities are established by South Island freezing companies for the killing and handling of chilled beef. “It is very nearly impossible to sell chiller quality beef at prices anywhere near the export schedule. This is acting adversely against farmers breeding and feeding cattle for this trade. The growth of beef cattle numbers in the South Island has been very encouraging indeed, and everything should be done to encourage this very prosperous part of our New Zealand meat export industry,” Mr Roberts said.
