The Minister of Education (Mr R. M. Algie) yesterday morning opened the new home science block at the Avonside Girls’ High School, and left in the afternoon by car for Blenheim. Today. he will lay the foundation stone of the assembly hall at Nelson College and on Thursday will open the assembly hall at the Greymouth Technical High School. Mr Algie will return to Christchurch on Friday and leave for Wellington by that evening’s steamer express.

Mr John Templeton, a Christchurch engineer, has been approved for transfer to associate membership of the Institution of Electrical Engineers (A.M.1.E.E.). This has been announced from the institution's headquarters in London.

Mr Norman C. Speight, C.8.E., has been elected chairman of directors of the head office board of the Trustees Executors and Agency Company of New Zealand, Ltdx He succeeds Mr G. R. Ritchie, who died recently. Mr J. M. Ritchie, managing director of the National Mortgage and Agency Company of New Zealand, Ltd., has been elected a director of the company to fill the vacancy caused by the death of his uncle, Mr G. R. Ritchie. Cr. J. E. Jones was reappointed by the City Council last evening as the council’s representative on the Canterbury Provincial Patriotic Council. The Deputy-Mayor (Cr. G. Manning) has been re-elected as the City Council representative on the Christchurch Technical College board of managers. Cr. T. H. McCombs was appointed a Christchurch Sinking Fund Commissioner by the City Council last evening, to replace the late Mr M. E. Lyons. Mr J. W. Huggins, the Chief City Inspector, has been nominated by the City Council as a delegate of the Municipal Association to the national conference on the care of the aged. Stock Exchange Visit A party of City Councillors will visit the Christchurch Stock Exchange this morning to see the morning call. The exchange is holding visitors’ days on Wednesday and inviting different sections of the community to see the work.
