Explosives Found In Boys’ Hideout
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) SYDNEY, June 1. In a bat ridden cave in bush country 100 miles north of Sydney, police yesterday uncovered a schoolboy hideaway, and retrieved a large quantity of explosives missing from Fort Scratchley. To reach the cave, police had to inch their way down the face of a steep rocky cliff. Neatly stacked in the cave were mortar bombs, grenades, several thousand rounds of cartridges, percussion clips, flare trips, fuses and other types of explosives. At dusk, the police had seen boys scaling the cliffs leading to the fort, four miles from the cave. They called in army personnel, cordoned the cliff face, and as the boys scrambled down and made a dash for it, the police caught and questioned them. Police said the boys admitted they had raided the fort armoury three times and were making a fourth attempt when seen. They said the boys admitted having exploded grenades in the bush near the cave. The police inquiries are continuing.
