PRESIDENT TO VISIT CHRISTCHURCH Dr. Norman MacKenzie, President of the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, will pass through Christchurch bn Monday on his way to attend a conference in Australia of vicechancellors of universities of the British Commonwealth. Now in Auckland, Dr. Mackenzie will visit Wellington and come to Christchurch to catch the Tasman plane for Sydney. Although his time, will be limited, he may speak to the Canterbury University College staff club on Monday morning, but there will be no public functions. Dr. MacKenzie has had a distinguished career in law and public affairs. He graduated from Dalhousie, took the master of laws degree at Harvard, then went to St. John’s College, Cambridge, and at Gray’s Inn, London, was called to the bar, took the doctorate in laws, and became a legal adviser in the International Labour Office, Geneva. Subsequently he held appointments at the Universities of Mount Allison, New Brunswick, Toronto, Ottawa, Briston, Alberta, and Glasgow. In 1942 he became a King’s counsel. In the First World War, in the Canadian Infantry, he won the military medal and bar. In the Second World War he was chairman of the War-time Information Board of Canada, chairman of the New Brunswick Reconstruction Commission, and afterwards chairman for three years of the National Conference of Canadian Universities. He was a member of many committees on international affairs and labour problems and from 1932 to 1942 was a delegate to the conferences of the Institute of Pacific Relations in many places overseas. He became Canadian chairman of the Save the Children Fund and vice-president of the Canadian Y.M.C.A. In 1946 he was made a companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George and is a fellow of the Poval Society of Canada.
