QUALITY GRADING OF EGGS

PRODUCERS SAID TO BE DISSATISFIED The enforcement of egg quality grading had caused a good deal of dissatisfaction among producers, said the chairman (Mr E. Chambers) when he presented his report to the annual meeting of the Canterbury-Westland Poultry keepers’ Association. “Though this step was taken at the request of the industry and must be supported, it is essential that the application of the scheme must be standardised to avoid the anomalies apparent this season,” Mr Chambers said. “The authority is aware of this and we understand is taking steps to improve the position next season. Your council has requested the authority to enlist the aid of Lincoln College to assist in the problem of quality, and also to make a grant to the college from the special funds held for research and educational work.” Mr Chambers said that the expected progress in Canterbury under the industry’s Egg Marketing Authority had not yet been attained. Adverse comment had been heard about the price support scheme, which had operated early in the year before the flush season. but the scheme had proved beneficial to the industry as a whole. The only real criticism poultrykeepers in Canterbury could have had was about the basis of the levy which was paid on all eggs passing through floors, rather than on “in-shell’ sales of eggs from’ which the benefit accrued. The general manager of the New Zealand Poultry Board (Mr A. C. Brindle) also addressed the meeting.
