SKI-ING AT WINTER OLYMPIC GAMES
N.Z. URGED TO SEND TEAM (New Zealand Press Association, AUCKLAND, June 2. New Zealand could be in the race at the 1956 Winter Olympic Games, said Mr Harvey Clifford, chief instructor at the Chfeteau Tongariro, today. “If a team is sent —I understand it will not—it would put up a show and finish at least among the top half of the competing nations,” he said. Mr Clifford, a Canadian representative skier at the 1948 Winter Olympic Games in St Moritz, and chief instructor at the Chateau for the last three seasons, said that the standard of skiing in this country was sufficiently high to warrant an Olympic squad. “I am going to push for it and suggest that the Ski Council get cracking,” he said. “Olympic results,” he added, “are not important.” New Zealanders fared badly at the 1952 Winter Games, but because of the experience and knowledge gained on that trip, the standard of ski-ing in the Dominion had been raised considerably.
