MAGNETIC SURVEY’S REPORT May this year was an exceptionally warm month, with a temperature of 79.7 degrees on May 6—a record maximum for 51 years, says the monthly meteorological report of the Magnetic Survey in Christchurch. The mean temperature of 50.7 degrees was 3.1 degrees above average and the second highest on record. This was exceeded in May, 1950. when there was a mean temperature of 51.1 degrees. The mean maximum temperature of 59.6 degrees was 3.9 degrees higher than normal, and also a record. The sunshine total of 144.8 hours was 15.5 hours more than usual. The mean grass minimum temperature was 4.8 degrees higher than average. Nine frosts were recorded, compared with the average of 14. Rainfall for the month totalled 3.29 inches.
