NEW ZEALAND’S PROSPERITY

Sir, —Reading Mr Holland’s statements about “the country’s prosperity, the buoyancy of finance, and the generosity of the Social Security being unsurpassed in any part of the world,” I would like to bring aft undeniable fact before the notice of readers. Any prosperity or well-being of the mass of the people is entirely due to the Labour legislation which the Government annexed and is using as part of its own policy; e.g., free maternity hospitals, free medicines, pay during holidays, 40-hour week, irrigation and farm schemes, invalid pensions, etc. The great State rental housing scheme has declined, however, in favour of private enterprise building, at high costs. If Mr Holland’s Government had functioned on its own policy of private enterprise, coupled with exploitation (cost of living), we would now have a Labour Government in office.—Yours., etc., REALITY. June 2, 1955.
