ASSAULT ON TRAFFIC OFFICER
ACCUSED SENT TO GAOL FOR TWO MONTHS (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 26. For assaulting a traffic officer, Thomas William James, a farmer, aged 33, was sent to gaol for two months by Mr R. M. Grant, S.M., in the Auckland Magistrate’s Court today. The Magistrate dismissed a charge of driving while under the influence of liquor so as to be incapable of having proper control of a motor vehicle. The accused told the Court that he had struggled with the traffic officer because the officer would not let him ring his solicitor. He pleaded not guilty to both charges. A doctor who examined the accused at the police station said he considered that the accused was not in a fit state to drive a car. Under cross-examina-tion by Mr J. F. W. Dickson the doctor said that in previously concussed cases it was possible for the pulse rate to rise to 112 when the person became excited.
Mr Dickson said that the accused had been discharged from the Army with concussion in 1944.
