GOLF AND RACES
Sir, Mr Ray Blank is hopelessly out of date if he thinks people will applaud his broadcast statement that “golf may keep young people off the racecourse,” Surely he must realise that if this was so the Government would open Totalisator Agency Board offices on, or near, golf courses. I am informed, by the usual “reliable .sources,” that the two State-owned banks are bringing down a scheme by which they will act as agents for their depositors and thus save the slight inconvenience of opening a credit account with the Totalisator Agency Board. This will be a great step forward, as the Post Office, with its school banking scheme, will be able to indoctrinate the children, some of whom may even aspire to the highest paid government position—running the T.A.B. —Yours, etc., REG NIRTS.
April 24, 1955. [Both the acting-manager of the Bank of New Zealand (Mr F. H. Moss) and the secretary of the Totalisator Agency Board (Mr M. B. Smythe) had no comment to make when this letter was referred to them.]
