Tornado Causes 22 Deaths
(Rec. 12.20 a.m.) NEW YORK, May 26. At least 22 persons were reported to have been killed and about 100 injured by a tornado that roared from Northern Texas into Western Oklahoma last night and smashed into Kansas today. Police at Blackwell, Oklahoma, said there were 12 known dead in the northeastern section of Blackwell, where the tornado levelled or damaged homes and factories in a 16-block section. About 70 were injured. Seven were reported to have been killed at Udall, Kansas, and three in other parts of Oklahoma. An unidentified number of workers was reported to have been trapped in a glass-making factory in Blackwell that was demolished.
A fire burned out of control in the ruins of the glass factory, because the water supply had been disrupted. Telephone services in Blackwell were out of order for several hours and amateur operators used shortwave radios to summon doctors, nurses and fire brigades.
