NEW CHIEF OF NAVY STAFF

ARRIVAL OF ADMIRAL J. E. H. MCBEATH

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 26.

N< '.v Zealand’s new Chief of Naval Staff-designate (Rear-Admiral J. E. H. Mcßeath) arrived at Wellington today in the liner Ruahine from London. Rear-Admiral Mcßeath, who was accompanied by his wife and infant son, will take over from the retiring Chief oi Naval Staff (Commodore Sir Charles Madden) on May 2. Tomorrow he will meet members of the Naval Board, and on Thursday will pay calls on the Prime Minister (Mr Holland), the Minister of Defence (Mr T. L. Macdonald), the Chief of the General Staff (Major-General W. G. Gentry), and the Chief of the Air Staff (Air Vice Marshal W. H, Merton).

He joined the Royal Navy in 1922, and commanded destroyers ta World War 11, serving in North Sea and English Channel patrols, ta Atlantic and Malta convoys, and ta convoys to North Russia. He won the D-S.O. while commanding H.M.S. Venomous in an action off Boulogne in 1940. In the following year he was awarded the D.S.C. while serving ta H.M.S. Oribi ta a Malta convoy. Before coming to New Zealand he was commodore commanding the Royal Navy barracks at Devonport.
