N.Z. BRASS BAND CONTEST

EVENTS AT AUCKLAND NEXT WEEK (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, February 24. The biggest New Zealand brass band championship contest since 1949 will open on Sunday at Carlaw Park, Auckland. Nineteen bands, in three grades, will compete. Although high compared with recent years, the number of bands taking part is well below the record Auckland 1949 mark of 31. More than 850 bandsmen are coming by train, aeroplane, bus, and private car, and in spite of anxious moments all have accommodation arranged. The defending A grade champion band, Kaikorai (Dunedin), winner at the last three championships, and one of the greatest combinations in the history of band competition in New Zealand will arrive by air on Saturday afternoon. Kaikorai and the other top Dunedin band, the former champion St. Kilda Band, have chartered two aircraft each for the trip—one for each band’s musicians and the others for their instruments. After the official opening at Carlaw Park the hymn test for A and B grade bands will be decided. The grade tests are set down for evening performances, the A grade on Tuesday and Thursday, and the B grade on Monday and Wednesday. The D grade tests will be held on Friday morning and afternoon.
