FIRE AT WAIKUKU BEACH
CAFE BURNED DOWN AT NIGHT A cafe at Waikuku beach, a semi-two-storeyed building, was destroyed by fire on Tuesday night. The Rangiora Volunteer Fire Brigade, under Superintendent C. W. Tyler, attended the fire with a trailer pump, but by the time they arrived the building was ablaze from end to end and only a refrigerator and three tables we’re saved.
There was nef-bne in the cafe, which had been locked up by the proprietor, M? Ernest S. Marshall, when he left for his home at Union street, New Brighton, about 4.30 p.m. The outbreak was discovered by a camper, who gave the alarm about 11.25 p.m. The building was threatened by the flood in the Ashley river in December last, when the protective bank collapsed and the river came within 16 yards of the cafe. On that occasion it was necessary to shift the stock until the flood danger had passed. Mr Marshall had then been in occupation only eight weeks.
