N.Z. MAN TO BE DEPORTED
Korean War Soldier In Canada
(Rec. 9 p.m.) VANCOUVER. Nov. 6. Canadian immigration officials today ordered the immediate deportation of a New Zealand-born Korean war veteran, Mr Harry. Martin, aged 38, who contracted tuberculosis while serving in the Far East. Mr Martin received the deportation order while lying iq bed in the Shaughnessy Hospital, Vancouver. A veteran of three years’ service in the Royal Canadian Army in Korea, Mr Martin came to Canada from New Zealand in 1949. “They just wheeled my bed out of the ward and made me sign a paper saying I was a member of a prohibited class,” Mr Martin said. He said he intended appealing to Federal officials in Ottawa. Mr Martin said the immigration officer. Mr H. Crump, who handled the case, had not asked him a single question before making him sign the deportation order. “Mr Crump said: T have reached the decision that you may not come into or remain in Canada as it has been proven that you are a member of a prohibited class’,” he said. Mr Martin, who received an honourable discharge from the Canadian Army, said: "Think what this will do to my reputation. The prohibited class clause is one dealing with health reasons, and authorities say this is purely a matter of law and the only reason for deportation. “I am not kicking about being deported so much as the way the order is worded. It is a rotten way to put a case. People will think I am a commie or a criminal or something,” he said.
