NATIONALISTS IN ALGERIA
Movement Outlawed By French (Rec. 8 p.m.) PARIS, November 7. The French Government today outlawed the Algerian Nationalist Movement for the Triumph of Democratic Liberties, and all dependent organisations. The ban, decided by the Cabinet yesterday, applies throughout the French metropolitan area, including Algeria. The movement, known as the M.T.L.D., was formed to replace the Algerian People’s Party, which was dissolved by the French Government after World War 11. Its leader, Messali Hadj, was exiled in 1952 and is living in forced residence on the Atlantic CoastPolice launched a big round-up of Nationalists throughout Algeria today, raiding the homes of many members of the M.T.L.D. At the same time police made a similar drive in towns in France, searching the offices of the movement and raiding North Africans’ meeting halls and private homes. Details of arrests were not immediately disclosed.
