SCHOOL BUILDING PROGRAMME

“Splendid Record” In Christchurch

MINISTER REVIEWS PROGRESS

Eighty-four new classrooms were built at schools in the Christchurch area, and in the last five years 140 classrooms had been built in the district, said the Minister of Education (Mr R. M. Algie) yesterday, in a statement reviewing school building in the district. He said it . was obvious that some of the work had been initiated by the Labour Government, but what counted was that the record was a splendid one. He thanked members of the Canterbury Education Board, the Christchurch Post-Primary Schools’ Council and boards of technical colleges for assistance. New primary schools had been provided at Ham road, Bamford street, Mairehau and Quinns road, he said. They represented a total of 35 new classrooms, and there could be added the first stage of the intermediate school at Heaton street, consisting of 10 new rooms. Substantial additions had been made at 19 primary schools in the metropolitan area, 38 new classrooms having been built in permanent materials. At Linwood, a new high school had been built, its first stage was in use, and the 13 classrooms fully occupied. Ten extra rooms had been provided for the Christchurch Technical College, and additional rooms built at the Christchurch Boys’ High School, the Christchurch West High School, the Avonside Girls’ High School and the Papanui Technical High School. “So far the work done in this field represents 34 new permanent classrooms,” the Minister said.

New primary schools were being built at Burnside road (nine rooms) and Banks avenue (five rooms). Also in hand was the building of 19 classrooms for primary schools at Aranui, Mairehau, New Brighton North. New Brighton South, and Spreydon. “It is good to be able to report also that the second stage of the Linwood High SchooLJs in hand, and that additional classrooms are being built at the Avonside Girls’ High School and the Christchurch West High School,” the Minister said.
