CHORAL FESTIVAL

-TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD CHOIRS The first choral festival of the Christchurch Area Federation of Townswomen’s Guilds was held in the St. Andrew’s Hall last evening. Four choirs took part, and considering that for at least one of them, it was a first appearance, the standard was commendably high. Groups from four guilds performed short programmes and at the end of the evening they combined to sing “England” by Parry. The Riccarton choir was conducted by Anita Ledsham, that from Beckenham by Phyllis Allison and Myra Thomson, and Gertie Lamont con-ducted-the Somerfield and Linwood groups respectively. The accompanists were Irene Anderson, Winifred Richards, Moya Milne, and Clarice Scott. Mr John Ritchie spoke of the work done by all concerned, emphasising the need for constant attention to tone production and commending the choristers for the standards so far achieved. Mr Ritchie conducted the massed items. Assisting the choirs, were Mr Robert Allison, who sang three songs, and Misses Alison Black and Glenys Bullard, who played two pianoforte duets.
